Journalism That Matters: Create or Die 2 [1]
Next month, I will be attending "Create or Die 2 [2]," [2] a three-day Journalism That Matters [5] conference in Greensboro, North Carolina. Designed as a platform for journalism-oriented entrepreneurs who want to "disrupt and diversify the media status quo," the conference is a mashup of journalists, entrepreneurs, programmers, bloggers, technologists, educators, developers, designers, social entrepreneurs, community activists and others. Create or Die 2 is the second act of Journalism That Matters’ successful "Create or Die" diversity-and-journalism sequence that began last summer at Wayne State University [6] in Detroit.
Participants at Create or Die 2 will have the chance to practice pitches for entrepreneurial ideas in a lush summer venue steeped in history, near to both the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Raleigh-Durham. Project ideas developed during the first two days of the conference will be judged by a group scheduled to include "America's Youngest Media Mogul" Hezekiah Griggs III [7], founder of H360 Venture Capital, Roger A. Gafke [8] of the Reynolds Journalism Institute and Jan Schaffer [9] of J-Lab at American University. Foundation funders and content coaches will be present to give feedback on ideas and how to jump start them, and John Keefe [10], senior executive producer for news at public radio's WNYC in New York, will be on hand as a "conversation catalyst."
The Citizen Media Law Project is excited to participate in Create or Die 2 and to contribute its experience in connecting digital journalism ventures with legal resources [11] and representation [12]. I look forward to seeing you there!
Create or Die 2 will be held at the Elliott University Center [13] at the University of North Carolina Greensboro's business school. Conference lodging [14] includes dorm suite rooms ($68/night) on the UNC-Greensboro campus and the Marriott Downtown in Greensboro (at the Journalism That Matters rate of $99/night).
